Food

  • The council offers a weekly food waste collection service, enabling food waste to be diverted away from landfill and to an anaerobic digester to produce energy
  • There are many tips available on Love Food Hate Waste for you to cut down the amount of food waste you produce in your home. You can also use food sharing applications such as Olio to share any excess edible food that you have with other local people.
  • Where possible, it is good to source food locally. There is a farmers' market that comes to Colchester on the first Saturday of the month, with nearly 30 stalls staffed by local businesses, farms and individuals stocking local produce. It is open from 9.30am to 2pm outside the Mercury Theatre.
  • The environmental impacts of meat and dairy production have been widely publicised. You can take part in initiatives such as Meat Free Monday to cut down on your consumption of these food types. See more information on vegetarian and vegan recipes on the BBC Good Food and Veganuary websites.
  • Businesses are also doing their bit to try and reduce their food waste by selling items at a reduced price when food is nearing its use by date. Many local cafes, supermarkets and restaurants are using an app called Too Good To Go to help with this. Businesses can list unsold food on the app which you can then then pick up at a reduced price at the end of the day to avoid it being binned.
