Hug a tree activity

What you will need

  • Blindfold or something to use as a blindfold
  • More than one tree
This works best in an area where there are several trees, so if you don’t have that at home, it can be done on your daily walk.

In a pair, person A is blindfolded. Person B is not. Person B leads person A to a tree. You may choose to use a long and circuitous route, or spin them around first, so they don’t know which way they are going. We recommend guiding someone by the elbow, and explaining what is around them, such as a slope, or something to step over.

When you get near a tree ask them to put their hands out then feel for the tree.

Person A now can feel all around the tree, as high as they can reach, right down to the ground, how far they can get their hands around, even smell the tree, until they think they have got to know their tree.

Person B leads person A away from the tree, removes their blindfold and person A needs to guess which tree they were touching.

You may also want to explore a tree a bit more using some of the ideas in our Parks at home 6 and 7.
