Nearly 50 local heritage attractions and buildings across Colchester will open their doors to the public free of charge during this year’s Heritage Open Days, taking place from 12 to 21 September 2025. As part of the national programme, organised by the National Trust with support from the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery, the event offers rare access to a wide range of historic locations, many of which are not normally open to visitors.
This year’s programme has a record number of openings and events, with new additions and returning favourites offering something for everyone. Colchester Castle will offer free entry on Saturday 13 September, giving visitors the chance to see one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and enjoy the current exhibition, Mythical Creatures, which explores the origins and folklore of legendary creatures through artefacts, stories and displays. Hollytrees Museum will also be open, offering a glimpse into Georgian life and the chance to view the city’s social history collections in a beautiful heritage setting.
Other highlights include the Roman Circus Visitor Centre, which is open for two days this year, offering insights into Britain’s only known Roman chariot racing track. Peake’s House, a rarely accessible 16th-century merchant’s house, will welcome visitors into its beautifully preserved rooms. The Moot Hall will host a special event featuring the new City Organist, William Saunders, with opportunities to meet and play the historic organ and have tea or coffee in the parlour with the Mayoress. Outside the city centre, the Mersea Roman Barrow offers a unique chance to walk inside a rare Roman burial mound dating back to AD 100–120.
Some venues require advance booking. Full programme details, including accessibility information, can be found in the official leaflet available from the Visitor Information Centre at Hollytrees Museum or other participating venues across Colchester. Alternatively, it can be accessed online via the Visit Colchester website.
Cllr Lee Scordis, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Environment, said: "Heritage Open Days is a brilliant opportunity to celebrate Colchester’s unique history and architecture. This year’s expanded programme showcases the incredible range of heritage we have in the city – from Roman remains to Georgian homes and civic landmarks. It’s a chance for residents and visitors alike to explore places they may never have seen inside and connect with the stories that make Colchester special."
