As part of this year’s Refugee Week celebrations, a special football match took place on Saturday 21 June at Shrub End Community Sports Centre. Co-organised by Colchester City Council staff, the friendly game against RAMA’s Refugee Football Team highlighted the power of sport to foster friendship, inclusion, and community across diverse backgrounds.

The football match was an exciting, with plenty of energy, teamwork, and good spirit on both sides. It was a closely contested game, and in the end, it was 6–4 to the RAMA team. It offered a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together, connect through sport, and enjoy a shared experience in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Activities for spectators and children, delivered by Colchester United Football in the Community, added to the day’s enjoyment.  After the match, food was generously provided by Joyce at Rafiki, creating a warm space for players and spectators to celebrate together.

“It was such a fun and exciting match! Everyone played with heart, and you could really feel the sense of community on and off the pitch,” said a RAMA team player.

“This was more than just a game – it was a great chance to meet new people, share stories, and enjoy being part of something positive,” said a Colchester City Council staff player.

The match truly demonstrated the unifying power of football in bringing people of all backgrounds together.

Cllr Jocelyn Law, Portfolio Holder for Community and Public Protection, said: "This event was a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate the rich diversity that makes Colchester such a special place to live. Refugee Week is about understanding, respect, and unity – and what better way to reflect that than through a friendly football match and a day of shared experiences. We thank everyone who took part, supported, or simply came to enjoy a day of unity and celebration.”
