Colchester City Council is marking the retirement of Town Serjeant Paul Lind, whose 36 years of dedicated service have made a lasting impact on the civic life of the city.

Paul joined the council in 1989 and has worked in a range of roles, rising from Hall Keeper to Deputy Town Serjeant before taking on the position of Town Serjeant 11 years ago. Throughout his career, he became a familiar and respected figure at civic events and ceremonies, supporting the Mayor, caring for the city’s regalia, and leading Town Hall tours that helped bring Colchester’s rich history to life for residents and schoolchildren alike.

Pam Donnelly, Chief Executive of Colchester City Council, said: “Paul Lind’s dedication to public service and civic tradition has been outstanding. His pride in Colchester, his professionalism, and his personal warmth have left a lasting legacy. We are incredibly grateful for everything Paul has given to the council and the wider community, and we wish him the very best in his retirement.”

Cllr Michael Lilley, Mayor of Colchester, commented: “Paul has been a pillar of our civic community for decades. His calm leadership, expert stewardship of our town’s traditions, and genuine compassion for those he’s served have brought immense pride to Colchester. On behalf of the whole city, I extend our heartfelt thanks and warmest wishes for the next chapter of his life.”

The council is also pleased to announce that Jonathan Rochford has been appointed as the new Town Serjeant. Formerly the Senior Hall Keeper and Deputy Town Serjeant, Jonathan has worked closely with Paul over many years and brings a deep understanding of the role and its importance to civic life.

Paul Lind said: “I have loved every minute of being Town Serjeant. It’s been an honour and a privilege to represent Colchester through the Mayoralty.

“I’ve met so many interesting and varied people over the years, but meeting the Queen – and later, King Charles – has been the highlight of my career.

“Today has been very emotional, with so many friends and colleagues joining me on my last day to wish me well in retirement – and on my birthday, too.

“I’ve been fortunate to work with fantastic colleagues and to meet so many people who care deeply about this city. I’m proud of the work we’ve done, and I know Jonathan will continue the role with passion and integrity.”

Jonathan Rochford said: “Paul has been an inspiration and a mentor to me and many others. I’m proud to take on this role and continue supporting the Mayor and preserving the civic traditions that make Colchester unique.”

Colchester City Council extends its sincere thanks to Paul Lind for his exemplary service and congratulates Jonathan Rochford on his appointment.
