Getting started online

Wifi on your device

To get started online you need to have a device which could be a computer, laptop, tablet or phone, the device just needs to have internet access and/or a connection via Wi-Fi. The easiest way to connect to the internet is through a contract either through broadband or a data package for a fixed monthly rate.

There are many comparison websites that take the hard work out of researching the cheapest broadband deals for you. These comparison sites do not cover all broadband suppliers, so you may want to do some research of your own as well.

When using Wi-Fi, it is important you understand the differences between public and free Wi-Fi, dependant on the contract you have, you may be allocated a certain amount of data which provides you with access to Wi-Fi enabled apps and the internet, over your providers network which should usually provide some security and are encrypted.

Public Wi-Fi is usually free and provided over open networks which is not a secure platform as they are usually not encrypted. Remember using public ‘Wi-Fi’ that it can present problems, as you don’t always have control over its security, so only use public ‘Wi-Fi’ from reputable establishments. If ever in doubt wait until you have a secure connection.

Do not enter any passwords, banking information or credit card details on an unsecure network. This ensures that phishing hackers are not able to gather this data.

Ensuring your devices have the latest software will ensure you are not vulnerable to security threats when using free ‘Wi-Fi’ points
