First UK Park Active scheme launches in Colchester

Colchester is the first UK location to launch a Park Active pilot scheme, a new active travel scheme created by the British Parking Association which supports the environment and encourages active travel to build healthier communities.
The scheme encourages motorists to park their vehicles at a Park Active location outside the town centre, and then walk or cycle for the remainder of their journey. In line with our new parking strategy, once restrictions on travel and nonessential trips are lifted, people will be able to take advantage of a discounted parking charge if they are taking part in the scheme.
Supporting our climate emergency declaration and strategic vision, the scheme aims to help reduce congestion and improve air quality, encourage more active travel options such as cycling and walking, free up central parking for short stay shoppers and blue badge holders, and once restrictions on non-essential journeys are lifted, encourage people to use outer town centre car parks which are cheaper and more accessible.
