The scope of the work

The works are to be undertaken by Breheny Civil Engineering Ltd, starting on 29 September 2020 with a planned contract period of 14 weeks until 15 January 2021.

The work includes the following:

  • Existing pedestrian route east of Via Urbis Romanae to be extended to Junction 28.
  • Controlled pedestrian crossing to be provided across westbound A12 off slip road.
  • Improvements to pedestrian facilities across A12 overbridge.
  • Controlled pedestrian crossing to be provided across eastbound A12 on the slip road.
  • New pedestrian facilities provided to north of junction to link in with existing provision along Cuckoo Farm Drive.
  • Local widening at junction of A12 westbound off slip road and circulatory carriageway to increase junction capacity.
  • Changes to road markings on both A12 eastbound and westbound off slip roads.
  • Alterations to existing Kerb Lines, VRS, Street lighting, Utility Apparatus and resurfacing carriageway.

The delivery of these works is a prerequisite of planning consent being granted for the development of the new Sports Park located to the north of Junction 28, and aims to:

  • Improve pedestrian movements through the junction, providing a strategic sustainable link between the development and the Town Centre.
  • Provide safe crossing facilities for pedestrians when crossing the SRN slip roads
  • Increased capacity at the junction by providing additional approach lanes on both east and west bound off slip roads.

To maintain traffic flows, works have been programmed to be done at night between the hours of 8.00pm to 6.00am. It will be necessary for safety reasons to implement closures of the A12 slip roads whilst works are being carried out for which agreed diversion routes are to be signposted.
