Highways England: Notification of A12 roadworks

An introduction to the scheme

Colchester City Council’s plans to create a multi-million sports complex within its Northern Gateway growth area are reaching fruition with an anticipated opening date of January 2021.

The Northern Gateway Sports Park will feature a state-of-the-art sports centre with a high quality gym and studios, a sports hall for cricket and badminton, a club house for Colchester Rugby Club with two artificial grass and seven natural grass pitches. There will be a 1 mile floodlit cycle road track with a learn-to-ride and pump track, running spaces, an archery area and a vibrant café which will be a great place to meet friends and refuel.

The Sports Park will be open between 7.00am and 11.00pm every day and will have space for 358 cars. Moving the existing sports and rugby ground will release 22 acres on the old sports site to make way for 560 new homes.

To allow more people to safely and sustainably access the Sports Park from Colchester Town Centre, we are working in partnership with Highways England and Breheny Civil Engineering Ltd to deliver safer pedestrian and cycling routes through the A12 at junction 28.

The scheme will deliver controlled crossing points and provide new footpath and cycleway links. Widening the slip lanes at the approaches to the northern and southern roundabouts will increase capacity within the junction, improving traffic flows. The provision of controlled crossings will provide for a more direct walking and cycling route through the junction, ensuring the safety of pedestrians and cyclists using this junction.
