Do you fancy a touch of culture? Have an inkling for a historical holiday? Georgian Colchester was the place to come.  

One of the draws to Colchester was the Eryngo (or sea holly) root, which was sold as a candied sweet, and marketed to help colds, coughs and as an aphrodisiac!  

Why not try looking out for the Big Five Georgian Colchester highlights.  

  • Hollytrees House - Commissioned by Elizabeth Cornelisen in 1718, now home to Hollytrees Museum and Colchester Visitor Information Centre. 
  • The Summerhouse - Built by Charles Grey in 1731, copying the design of a Roman temple.  
  • The Minories - The building that is known as the Minories was remodelled in 1731 to form its current layout.  
  • East Hill House (76 High Street) - A townhouse completed in 1742.   
  • Wivenhoe House – Built within the grounds of Wivenhoe Park in 1759. It is now a Grade II listed building, containing a hotel run by the University of Essex.
