Wild Food activities

Welcome to Wild about Colchester. Each week we are going to investigate the wildlife around Colchester. The theme this week is all about wild food – for people, animals or plants.

In the bingo sheet for this week, we have asked you to find places, animals, and plants that are near water. Some you may be able to find at home, in your garden or a park near your house. Others you may have to travel to find something at one of the countryside or town parks. Can you find them all?

As this week is all about food, when you have lunch or dinner one day, look at where your food has come from. Is it from the UK or abroad? Is anything grown locally? Have you grown anything? It is normally best to try to eat things that come from the UK, as it means there are fewer food miles – the food has travelled a shorter distance.

However, it is often not possible to eat only food from the UK, so we rely on food coming from abroad, meaning we are connected to people all around the globe.

Outdoor activities

Muddy Food

There is nothing quite so great for young children as playing with mud! Encourage them to make a mud pizza, or mud ice cream. What is around to add as toppings? Can a stick become a flake for the ice cream? Can leaves make up a pizza topping? Old kitchen containers, cutlery or utensils that are no longer being used are good to stimulate imagination. Providing a bowl of water can help create mud if it is dry, adds another dimension to the play and is somewhere to help wash up.

Bird food

Another way to explore food is to think about what animals may eat. There are some ideas for making bird or insect feeders:
