Grow your own salad leaves

Salad leaves can be planted all summer, and once they grow they can be cut to be eaten, then they will grow again, so you can harvest them several times.

You will need:
  • Plant pot – 20cm is a good size
  • Pebbles or broken terracotta bits
  • Compost
  • Seeds for lettuce or salad leaves
  • Trowel
Put a few pebbles or broken terracotta bits the bottom of the plant pot. This will provide drainage. Fill the pot to about 3cm below the top with compost. Plant the seeds according to the instructions on the packet. Cover with a thin layer of compost and mist with water.

Keep the pot damp (but not too wet) and the salad leaves should start to grow. When they are big enough you can cut some to eat. The plant will still keep growing and so you can keep harvesting the leaves week after week.
