Cycling in Colchester

Bike training and support for cyclists

Cycling improves mental and physical health but despite it being one of the safest ways to travel, research shows that 66% of people do not feel safe on a bike.

Confidence building cycle training

National Standard cycle training is a programme to build practical cycling skills and an understanding of how to cycle on today’s roads. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned cyclist, cycle training gives you the opportunity to learn new skills, improve your knowledge and build your confidence.

This is delivered by Essex County Council under the Bikeability brand in schools across Colchester and sometimes via sessions in the school holidays.
Adults also have the opportunity to access free one to one Learn to Ride, Cycle Confidence Advanced Cycle training or family cycle training, depending on their needs and level of experience.

Support for cyclists

For information on cycling events, the local cycling network, help finding bike repair shops and training courses visit Cycle Colchester.

Colchester has three volunteer run Bike Kitchens that offer a DIY community bike workshop where you can make use of tools to carry out repairs on your own bike or work under the supervision of an experienced and qualified mechanic who can provide advice and support.
