Information and support for preparing for future climate risks

Information about future changes in climate:

  • The BBC have produced a tool to help you understand climate projections and changes in weather variables like temperature and rainfall.
  • The Met Office have produced a summary report of key climate risks for the UK, alongside potential future changes in climate and weather indicators for Colchester. The report is written in an readable format, making complex information understandable. The report can be read on this website (You will need to select ‘Colchester’ as the local authority to access the relevant report when prompted).
  • The Met Office has also produced several longer articles on different climate change hazards and how they can impact different services including health, transport, agriculture and more. These can be viewed on their website.

Preparing for climate change:

  • The Met Office have information on their website about signing up for weather warnings, as well as general advice to cope with different climate hazards like flooding, extreme heat, storms and more. This can be viewed on their website.
  • The Red Cross have information available for ways to keep your home cool during hot weather which can be viewed on their website.

  • Essex County Council are currently offering a ‘property flood resilience grant’ which provides up to £8,000 per property for flood protection measures for homes in Essex that are at risk of flooding. People living in areas considered to be at significant risk of flooding will be eligible for the funding. This risk is calculated based on past and projected future floods and a vast amount of Colchester is considered to be within the flood risk area. You can view areas affected by flood risk on the Essex County Council website, as well as find out more about the property flood resilience grant
