Consultation launched on the future of Colchester’s playgrounds

PUBLISHED: 10 October 2025

Colchester City Council has launched a public consultation to help shape the future of 37 playgrounds across the city. Twelve playgrounds are set to receive full upgrades, while many others will benefit from partial improvements or new surfacing, ensuring that children and families can enjoy safe, inclusive and modern play areas for years to come.

This significant investment forms part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to managing and enhancing Colchester’s valued community assets. By revitalising play parks, the Council is encouraging outdoor play and creating welcoming spaces that strengthen community ties. The approach also reflects a broader ambition to work more closely with local communities to manage and sustain these important assets for the long term.

A public consultation is now open, inviting feedback on the design and features of the playgrounds due for full refurbishment. Residents are encouraged to visit the council's website to check if their local playground is due for a full upgrade and to complete a short survey. The feedback will ensure the new play areas reflect the needs and aspirations of local families.

Cllr Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Neighbourhoods and Leisure, said: “This is fantastic news for Colchester’s families. We know how important play spaces are for children’s development and for bringing communities together. Whether it’s a full refurbishment or a partial upgrade, these changes will make a real difference to children and families across the city. I’m proud that we’re investing in the future of our communities and helping to create spaces where everyone can feel welcome and active.”

Cllr Mark Cory, Portfolio Holder for Resources and Assets, added: “Parks and playgrounds are cherished by residents across Colchester. We know how much these spaces mean to people. This investment is about more than just new equipment – it’s about looking after the places that matter to our communities, and making sure local voices are heard as we plan for the future. I’m genuinely excited to see the ideas and feedback that come in.”
