The Mayor and Mayoress of Colchester invite residents to join them for a special flag-raising ceremony at the Town Hall to commemorate Merchant Navy Day on Wednesday, 3 September 2025.

The ceremony will begin at 10am and will feature the raising of the Merchant Navy flag, the Red Ensign, to honour the men and women who have served – and continue to serve – in the Merchant Navy. This important day recognises their vital role in safeguarding the UK’s maritime trade and security.

The Mayor of Colchester, Cllr Michael Lilley, will lead the ceremony and address those gathered, reflecting on the sacrifices and dedication of Merchant Navy personnel throughout history, particularly during the Second World War, when they risked their lives to keep Britain supplied with essential goods and resources.

The Mayor said: “The Merchant Navy is the lifeblood of our island nation. For generations, its crews have faced danger with courage and determination to keep our country moving. This ceremony is not just about looking back – it’s about recognising their ongoing service today and ensuring their contribution is never forgotten.”

Residents are encouraged to attend the flag-raising ceremony and show their support for the Merchant Navy. For more information about Merchant Navy Day, visit: www.theseafarerscharity.org/get-involved/merchant-navy-day
