This summer, magic and adventure await at Colchester Castle and Hollytrees Museum, where visitors of all ages can step into a world of legendary beasts and fantastical tales.
From the spellbinding Mythical Creatures exhibition to lively storytelling sessions, costumed characters, and interactive family tours, there’s something for everyone. Young explorers can also dive into the excitement of the Mission Mythical Kids Club, running on selected dates throughout the school holidays.
Mythical Creatures – From 26 July 2025 visitors can embark on a magical story quest through folklore and legend, where they'll meet a Dragon, Unicorn, Griffin, and Mermaid brought to life through curious, enchanted objects. Inspired by medieval tales, this enchanting exhibition invites families to explore local tales and mythical creatures through storytelling.
Mythical Storytelling: Our friendly storyteller will share thrilling tales full of myths, legends, and fiery surprises. This fun-filled, interactive session is perfect for little ones aged 0+ and guaranteed to spark imaginations big and small.
Mission Mythical: Kids Club – Join us from 31 July, every Thursday and Friday this summer, for a magical mission where children discover a different mythical creature each week! Through themed games, quizzes, and hands-on crafts, young adventurers will dive into the world of legends and imagination.
Mythical Castle Creatures: Family Tour – Experience Colchester Castle like never before on this family-friendly tour that brings folklore and mythical creatures to life. Join us as we embark on a quest to discover dragons, unicorns, and other creatures.
Costumed Characters – Step into a world of legends with our mythical creature-themed gallery sessions! Meet costumed characters, enjoy fun games, and collect a special sticker. Perfect for curious kids and families exploring the Castle and an ideal activity after visiting our enchanting Mythical Creatures exhibition.
Alongside Colchester Castle’s displays and hands-on exhibits, Hollytrees Museum offers even more summer fun. Visitors can dive into the rich history of Colchester through interactive displays and family-friendly activities. Highlights include a daily History Hunt and the chance to Meet the Nannies on 13 and 20 August – both included with museum admission, though booking is encouraged for the Meet the Nannies sessions.
