Colchester City Council is celebrating the remarkable contributions of Dr Ian Ray, who was honoured with a Community Champion Award at the inaugural Mayor of Colchester Awards on 8 May 2025.
Dr Ray, who has played the organ at civic events since 1988 and formally served as Colchester’s Honorary Borough Organist for over a decade, received a Certificate of Recognition for his outstanding service to the city. He has been a central figure in civic life, lending his musical talents to countless events – from the Mayor Making Ceremony and Oyster Feast to the City Status celebrations.
A tireless advocate for Colchester’s musical heritage, Dr Ray played a pivotal role in the restoration of the Moot Hall organ through his work with the Friends of the Moot Hall Organ group. His commitment ensured that this iconic instrument not only survived but thrived – delighting audiences at regular lunchtime recitals and civic ceremonies alike.
As the council looks to the future, plans are underway to build on this legacy with a new opportunity to lead the stewardship of the Moot Hall organ. We are currently advertising for an Organ Curator, a role that reflects a renewed focus on enhancing public access, safeguarding the organ’s heritage, and reimagining its use for future generations.
Councillor Lesley Scott-Boutell, Mayor of Colchester, said: “Ian Ray’s contribution to civic life in Colchester has been extraordinary. His music has touched the lives of many, and his passion for the Moot Hall organ has helped secure its place at the heart of our city’s cultural identity. We thank him wholeheartedly and now look forward to shaping the next chapter for this treasured instrument.”
The Organ Curator role will work closely with the Friends of the Moot Hall Organ and other community partners to ensure that this vital piece of Colchester’s history continues to inspire and engage.
