Colchester Borough Council’s Licensing Committee last night (14 November) agreed to a new Pavement Permit Policy, which is now set to go to Full Council on 6 December 2018.
A growing number of catering businesses are now using footways outside their premises and setting up tables and chairs to increase their capacity and enhance their customers’ experience.
Colchester Borough Council has recognised that the outdoor provision for cafes, restaurants and bars is attractive to residents and visitors, and has developed this new policy to ensure consistency of standards and that Colchester’s street cafe scene is controlled and managed in a mindful way, sensitive to the needs of other footway users.
The new Pavement Policy covers minimum standards and conditions against which the merits of an application could be judged.
If approved by Full Council, the Pavement Permit will be required for a business to carry out this activity from 1 January 2019.
Cllr Mike Lilley, Portfolio Holder for Planning, Public Safety and Licensing, said: “We recognise that the attractiveness of Colchester can have a big impact on its prosperity. We want to make sure that Colchester is a place where residents and visitors want to come and enjoy their leisure time, and we’re doing this for a Better Colchester.”
The Licensing Committee also agreed to the proposed Statement of Gambling Licensing Policy for 2019-2022, at the 14 November meeting.
