Wasps treatment and advice
Wasps are common all over Britain. They are social insects, forming colonies inside nests, which they normally construct out of chewed wood in soil banks, roof spaces, trees and hedges.
As all wasp nests are started from a single wasp each year, the nest will take time to establish and grow to a size big enough for it to be spotted or become a nuisance. Often, due to the constant flow of wasps in and out of an area, you do not see the actual nest; only the entrance is spotted.
During August, wasps prefer a high-sugar diet, which is often found on fallen fruit or fermented fruit juice. This makes them “tipsy,” lazy, and aggressive towards anyone interfering with them. This also coincides with holidays and the hottest time of the year, which is when we like to eat outside in the open air.
The first frosts will kill off male wasps in the nest and only the individual queens survive in hibernation.
The existing nest is redundant and will never be used again. It is safe to remove it at this time of year but if it is in an area where it can’t be seen it can just be left in place.
You may notice a nest by seeing large numbers of wasps flying in and out of an area that the nest is located in, and this is usually around July/August depending on the weather.
If a wasp nest is not near your house or is in an area that you can avoid for the summer, it should be left alone since the wasps destroy pest insects and play a minor role in pollination.
