Disabled Facilities Grants

Discretionary Disabled Facilities Assistance (DFA) is available to help eligible applicants pay for the cost of adapting their home to meet the needs of a disabled person that are not covered by the mandatory Disabled Facilities Grant.

This could include, but is not limited to:

• The cost of adapting your home is more than the maximum mandatory Disabled Facilities Grant amount of £30,000 and you cannot find the additional costs yourself.
• You are unable to raise the amount we have asked you to contribute towards the cost of a Disabled Facilities Grant due to financial hardship.
• Your property is not adaptable.
• Works highlighted by an occupational therapist which are not covered by the Mandatory Disabled Facilities Grant.

Help you will get

The maximum Discretionary Disabled Facilities Assistance is £30,000. How much you can get depends on the funds available at the time of your application.

Discretionary Disabled Facilities Assistance will be secured on your property by a local land charge. If you sell the property or transfer the ownership within five years, then the loan is repayable with compound interest. If you sell your property after five years, it is repayable without interest.

Who can apply

You can apply for a Discretionary Disabled Facilities Assistance for adaptations if you have an owner’s interest in a property where an occupant is registered (or is registerable) as disabled.

Before applying for Disabled Facilities Assistance, you must provide proof that you are unable to get funds from elsewhere.
