Colchester Borough Council is monitoring the situation closely and will continue to take action to minimise disruption and keep residents and visitors safe. 

Coronavirus: updates, advice and guidance

Service updates

Due to Coronavirus some of our services are currently disrupted. Check back regularly for updates on what services are running as normal, are distupted, or closed.


  • Benefits and local council tax
    Housing support, benefits and Council Tax services are operating as normal.

  • Helpline

    Helpline is running as normal to offer emergency assistance to older and vulnerable people living in Colchester and North Essex. Call 01206 769799 or visit

  • Community services
    Community 360 are supporting residents in need with food and medical supplies.

  • Parking
    All our car parks are open and we encourage visitors to use MiPermit to make contactless payments.

  • Business support
    The Council has awarded almost £30 million in grants to eligible businesses. Businesses can apply for a new Discretionary Grant and book fully Council-funded 1:1 advice sessions with Colbea.

  • Parks and countryside sites

    Parks and countryside sites are open, but visitors must follow government guidelines. Car parks have re-opened. High Woods Country Park Visitors Centre remains closed.


  • Animal services
    We are currently only providing a pest control service for the external treatment of rats within your property.

  • Cemetery
    The cemetery is open, but visitors need to follow distancing guidelines.

  • Environmental
    You can report environmental and noise concerns however some visits have been suspended.

  • Housing
    The Housing Team are available by phone and email for moves that are considered urgent.

  • Planning and building control
    While planning applications are being processed as usual some site visits will be conducted virtually and site notices will be issued by email.

  • Recycling and rubbish
    Garden waste restarted on the 25 May. Temporary four-weekly collections of paper/card, plastic, cans and glass and an increased rubbish allowance ​remain until 19 June. Textile collections are suspended until further notice.

  • Special Collections
    Special Collections will restart on 1 June.

  • Charter market
    Some stall holders providing essential items and following government guidelines are trading. Follow @ColchMarket for the latest info and updates.

  • Leisure services

    Leisure World Tennis Centre has re-opened, but visitors must follow government guidelines. All other Leisure World sites remain closed. Residents can exercise from home by downloading the My Wellness App.
