Report Dangerous Structure

Report Non-Urgent Risks to the Public to Building Control

For non-urgent or deteriorating concerns that may pose a risk to the public in the future, please email BuildingControl@colchester.gov.uk with as many details and photos as safely practicable.

Examples of Non-Urgent Risks:

  • A deteriorating structure (e.g., cracks in walls, leaning fences, minor damage).

  • Loose debris that is not actively falling but may become a hazard in the future.

  • Any structural concerns that do not pose an immediate risk to public safety.

When Building Control is Not the First Point of Contact

Report Accidents or Immediate Risk to Life to 999 Emergency Services

Fire Service (Structural Risks and Rescue):
  • Imminent Collapse – A building, wall, or scaffolding is unstable and at risk of falling immediately.

  • Falling Debris – Roof tiles, masonry, or glass are actively falling and posing a danger.

  • Storm or Fire Damage – Severe weather, fire, or explosion has weakened a structure.

  • Entrapment – Someone is trapped or at risk due to structural failure.

Police (Public Safety and Road Hazards):
  • Vehicle Impact – A car crash or other incident has caused serious structural damage.

  • Public Safety Concerns – If the dangerous structure is in a public area and requires urgent crowd control or road closures.

Report to Essex Highways

For dangers on roads or highways, including:

  • Loose or deteriorating scaffolding.

  • Other road-related structural hazards.

Report via: Essex County Council - Roads, Streets & Transport

Report to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)

For concerns related to unsafe construction sites or working practices:

  • A dangerous building site.

  • Dangerous working practices.
