Check if you need Building Control Approval

Building work requires Building Control Approval and you're responsible for making sure that your building project complies with Building Regulations.

Building Regulations apply in England and Wales and are the minimum standards for design, construction and alterations to virtually every building.

Do I need a building regulations application?

Building Control Approval is different to "Planning Permission".

You must understand how building regulations apply to your building project as you're responsible for making sure that your work complies with them.

If they are not compliant, we have legal powers to prosecute.

You can find information and advice about building regulations and access current Approved Documents for England and Wales on the LABC Website.

You can apply to us for a Full Plans Application where we will check your designs and calculations before work begins to ensure they are compliant and then conduct inspections as work progresses.

For small-scale projects where you are confident that your designs comply with the regulations, you can submit a Building Notice instead. We will not check your designs but will come out to inspect the site as work progresses.

Some minor alterations, such as replacement windows, can also be done without Building Control approval, via the Competent Persons Scheme. Find further information on works and schemes.

If work has already started you can only apply for a Regularisation.
