Lucie Breadman
Strategic Director

How long have you worked for the Council?
I have worked for the Council since 1st June 2009, so almost 15 years!
Why did you choose to work for the Council?
Around that time, I was working for Tendring District Council and was unhappy after missing out on a promotion. I decided to apply for a Head of Corporate Management vacancy at Colchester. I’m so glad I did; I got the role and proved that out of disappointment can come the motivation to do something different and better!
Describe what you do in 100 words?
As Strategic Director, I’m part of Colchester’s Senior Board. I work with our wider Senior Leadership Team, politically appointed Administration, elected Members, Services, and partners to ensure we deliver on our Strategic Priorities. This includes fulfilling our statutory obligations and much more to ensure the health, wellbeing, and prosperity of Colchester’s residents, businesses, and visitors.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Working in Local Government gives you a chance to make a difference to people and places. The decisions we make can impact lives and places for years to come, either positively or negatively. It’s a hugely rewarding career, influencing everything from waste collection to major infrastructure projects.
Throughout your career at the Council, what has been your most rewarding moment?
There have been many memorable moments, such as opening new Community Centres, seeing staff members gain promotions, and receiving thank-you letters from the public. The response to the Covid Crisis stands out, particularly how quickly Colchester Council and our partners responded, showcasing the strength of our community and voluntary sector.
What would you say to someone thinking about a career at the Council?
Understand your own values and what motivates you. With the right values, a career at the Council can be highly rewarding, offering the chance to make a meaningful impact on your community. It involves diverse challenges, strong problem-solving skills, and collaboration to drive positive change. While it may not make you rich and can be demanding, it provides an opportunity to make a difference and work with exceptional people.
