Garden water activities

Make a drinking area for bird and insects

A very simple but effective way to offer water to birds and minibeasts.

You will need:
  • Saucer or shallow dish
  • Pebbles
  • Water
  1. Place the saucer somewhere stable and easy to get to. Put the pebbles in the saucer then tip some water into it. The pebbles give minibeasts and bird somewhere to sit safely and make sure they don’t drown.
  2. Ensure you check the saucer is full regularly, especially in dry weather.

Make a miniature pond

If you fancy having something a bit more permanent, you could build a pond. Ponds of any size are great in the garden, and attract all sorts of wildlife. This guide is about making a tiny pond – great for even a tiny garden!

You will need:
  • Watertight bucket or tub
  • Sand
  • Spade
  • Rocks and pebbles
  • Native pond plants
  • Water
  1. Choose where you pond is going to go and dig a hole that is a bit wider and deeper than your bucket or tub.
  2. Remove any sharp stones from the bottom of the hole, then line the base with sand.
  3. Stand the bucket on the sand, making sure it is level with the ground. Use some of the loose earth you dug out to fill in around the sides of the bucket
  4. Pile rocks and pebbles up to the top of the bucket to make a way for animals to get out, and plant the native pond plants if you have them.
  5. Fill with rainwater and wait for the animals to find it.
