Recycling and Waste Strategy for Colchester 2025 to 2040

The Recycling and Waste Strategy has now been to Colchester City Council’s Scrutiny Panel and to Cabinet.

Consultation

On 05 July 2024, the Draft Recycling and Waste Strategy had a six-week consultation to get feedback from residents.

Thank you to everyone that took the time to complete the consultation survey. The feedback you provided has helped us shape the Recycling and Waste Strategy for Colchester 2025 – 2040.

We collated and analysed all the feedback received during the consultation. From this information, we made changes to the Draft Recycling and Waste Strategy, reflecting what you have told us.

Scrutiny

We then presented the amended finalised draft strategy, and the plans to deliver it, to Colchester City Council’s Scrutiny Panel on 08 October 2024.

Our Scrutiny Panel looked closely at the proposals and discussed any issues that might affect local people and the ways to improve them.

This process of scrutiny ensures that local government decisions remain transparent, accountable, and open, resulting in improved policies, services and outcomes.

Cabinet

Following the Scrutiny Panel meeting, we presented the proposals to Cabinet on 23 October 2024. Cabinet is where major decisions are made about council services and policies, and this is where the decision was made to implement the Recycling and Waste Strategy.

The Recycling and Waste Strategy for Colchester will outline the plans for the next 15 years (2025 to 2040) and sets out Colchester’s vision and key principles for managing recycling and rubbish.

It is a plan to change the way we collect recycling and rubbish by helping residents to reduce waste, improve recycling, and provide a simple-to-use, financially stable service as we continue to face significant financial pressures.

It aligns with upcoming UK government legislation aimed at environmental impact reduction and easing climate change. All of this, to modernise Colchester’s waste collection service to ensure it is fit for the future of our city.

More information on the delivery of the new strategy will be available soon.
