Colchester Borough Council declared a Climate Emergency in July 2019 and we have since followed this up by developing a Climate Emergency Action Plan.
We have also developed an emerging Climate Challenge and Sustainability strategy for consultation.
We are working on key projects that will reduce emissions and produce positive environmental impacts and have listed the highlights for 2019/20.
The infographic includes several achievements that Colchester Borough Council has made between July 2019 and June 2020. These achievements include:
July 2019: Declaration of a Climate Emergency
September 2019: 57% less chewing gum on town centre streets
October 2019: Colchester named as a joint top climate-friendly area in East of England by Friends of the Earth
October 2019: Clean Air for Colchester survey and engagement launched with residents, schools and businesses
November 2019: Council commits to ending the use of glyphosate weedkiller
January 2020: 40% reduction in carbon emissions since 2008 achieved
January 2020: Climate Emergency Action Plan published
February 2020: 10,000+ trees given out at annual Trees for Years event
February 2020: Committed to phase out many single-use plastics in Council operations
March 2020: 4486 trees planted in 2019/20 for the Woodland Project (now called Woodland and Biodiversity Project)
May 2020: Council received funding for 25 electric cargo (eCargo) bikes
June 2020: Maps of Colchester Orbital (a 14-15 mile circular walking and cycling route in Colchester) published
