Ensuring sustainable planning and development in Colchester

Planning has a vital role in promoting the building of sustainable developments in Colchester. See how the Council’s planning team are achieving this.

The Council is taking a variety of actions to use the planning system to promote sustainability in Colchester. Within our Local Plan, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, providing options for renewable and low carbon energy technologies, and reducing the need to travel amongst others are key considerations. Adaptation to climate change in the design of developments, considering the risk of flooding, drought and overheating are also key issues included in the Local Plan.

We are updating a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) to supply guidance on carbon reduction and sustainable design to developers to help them embed these principles into new developments in Colchester.

A sustainability checklist is being produced by the Council as a requirement for the validation of planning applications. This will help us to assess the sustainability of proposed developments and aims to encourage developers to consider ways to reduce the environmental impact of their proposals.
