Community

We can all do our bit to reduce our environmental impact. There are many community organisations and activities that can help you make a difference.

Local organisations

There are many local businesses actively trying to reduce their environmental impact. A few are listed below, but there are always more popping up.

en-form: A local charity that offers environmental advice and support for individuals wanting to set up environmental projects.

Repair, Reuse, Recycle and Refill: It offers repair services, a reuse shop, takes donations of unwanted electronics for recycling and allows you to refill your household cleaning products.

Bike Kitchen: This workshop has a variety of tools that you can use to fix your bike, along with volunteers who can help you if you get stuck.

Colchester Makerspace: A facility that provides you with access to creative services such as ceramics, sewing machines and printmaking equipment for you to get creative. They also hold workshops enabling you to learn new skills from others.

Colchester Party Kit Hire: A local service offering various reusable party products for hire such as reusable tableware and decorations, helping you to reduce waste.

Please contact climate.change@colchester.gov.uk if you are a local business or community organisation and would like to be added to the list above.

Volunteering/Community organisations

If you have some free time and want to work with others to reduce environmental damage, then maybe consider volunteering with a community organisation that offer volunteering opportunities. There are also various organisations and community groups that bring people together to share environmental tips and news stories, enabling you to keep up to date with everything green.

Eco Colchester: Eco Colchester is a Friends of the Earth Community group that is looking to bring people together to share environmental advice and ideas to raise awareness about environmental issues and take action to reduce environmental damage. Content is shared on their Facebook page, where focus groups can be organised as well as the Eco Festival in the Castle Park.

en-form: As well as providing an environmental advice service, en-form also offers a drop-off service for many materials such as crisp packets, sweet and chocolate wrappers and pet food packaging amongst others. They have volunteering opportunities for you to sort out the different materials dropped off by residents, ready for sending off to Terracycle.

Extinction Rebellion Colchester: A local branch of the wider Extinction Rebellion movement that hold regular meetings to discuss approaches to environmental issues and run events and actions to raise awareness about the climate emergency.

Conservation work is a great way to contribute to the protection of local green spaces for the enjoyment of people and wildlife. The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) and Colchester Countryside Volunteer Rangers (CCVR) all offer regular opportunities to do conservation work in and around Colchester or or find out more abut volunteering in Colchester's parksEssex Wildlife Trust also offer other volunteering opportunities in its visitor centres.
