Statement of accounts

The Accounts and Audit (Amendment) Regulations 2024 came into effect on 30th September 2024 and have been designed by the Government to address a major backlog in audit completions. The vast majority of councils nationally, including Colchester City Council, have been significantly affected by the backlog.

The Regulations include a series of statutory deadlines aimed at progressively addressing the audit backlog over time, with “disclaimed” audit opinions required (if necessary) to be issued where insufficient time exists for external auditors to gather sufficient audit assurance in time to meet the deadlines.

The Colchester City Council outstanding Statement of Accounts for 2020/21, 2021/22 and 2022/23, including disclaimed opinions, were released for publication on 20th December 2024.

The statutory deadline for the publication of the audited Statement of Accounts for 2023/24 is 28th February 2025.
