Recycling service updates

Frozen bins

If we are unable to empty your bin on 30 November or 1 December because it is frozen shut or the contents are frozen solid, leave your bin out for collection on Monday 4 December and report a missed bin.

You can help to prevent your wheeled bins from freezing shut before collection by opening your bin lid on the morning of your collection day.

The contents of your garden waste bin are more likely to freeze than your other bins. If this happens the frozen lump of garden waste will not fall into the lorry when our crews tip the bin.

To prevent this, you could:

  • Use a small amount of warm water to release the lid and then dry them to prevent re-freezing.
  • Use a spade to loosen any garden waste on the morning of collection.
  • Make sure you do not overfill your bin and compact the garden waste; this leads to a greater chance of it freezing.
  • Consider leaving your garden waste bin in a warmer place such as in direct sunlight, in a shed or in a garage.
