Cycling and walking in Colchester

An electric cargo bike is an electric delivery bike with purpose-built storage.

Riding a bike or taking a walk instead of your car is the best way to travel for reducing your environmental impact and also improving your fitness. Some tips and ideas for walking and cycling are below:

Buying a bike

Want to cycle, but don’t want to fork out lots of cash for a bike?

Many workplaces and businesses offer cycle to work schemes, or salary sacrifice schemes for purchasing bikes.

This article on the cycle to work 'salary sacrifice' employee benefit provides a simple explanation of the scheme.

If price is putting you off, you can buy a second hand bike from re-cycle, a local charity that do great stuff to fix old bikes which are then donated to four countries in Africa where they can be used again. Remember to donate your old bikes to them too.

If you have an old bike in the shed that you need help making road worthy again, visit the Colchester Bike Kitchen or Wivenhoe Bike Kitchen for access to tools and advice from bike mechanics.

Cycling and walking routes

Perhaps you’re not sure where to cycle or walk locally? There are plenty of nature reserves and green spaces perfect for walking and cycling in Colchester. We manage many country parks and nature reserves across the borough.

The Colchester Orbital, a 14-15 mile cycling and walking route in and around Colchester, offers useful maps for cycling and walking – great for some local adventures.

Cycle training, maintenance and other support

ebikes/eCargo bikes

If the thought of struggling up big hills on a bike does not appeal to you, an electric bike (ebike) may be the perfect solution. The boost of having an electric battery on your bike will help you get up those hills in no time and make cycling easier.

We have a pool of eCargo bikes for local businesses to try out.
