Personal search and environmental information requests
A personal search is a search of the Local Land Charges Register and can be made by anyone but does not bear the official stamp of Colchester City Council.
We do not charge for personal searches as they are free of charge under the Environmental Information Regulations.
The results of your personal search will be unrefined data, and we are unable to validate any information in relation to a personal search.
How to request a personal search
You will need to email specific information to EIR@colchester.gov.uk.
You must email:
- a plan of the site (your search cannot be completed without this)
- address/description of the land
- Your reference
We will respond within 20 working days.

The Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) 2004 give you access rights to environmental information held by a public authority and can be requested separately.
Access to information requests under EIR will usually be dealt with within twenty working days of receipt.
How to request planning and building control information under EIR
You will need to email specific information to EIR@colchester.gov.uk.
You must email:
- a plan of the site (your search cannot be completed without this)
- address/description of the land
- your reference
We will respond within 20 working days.
Additional property information held by public authorities:
- public rights of way - Essex Highways.
- drainage matters - Essex County Council.
- outstanding notices - Highways, Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management - Essex County Council.
- Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) - there is no CIL charging structure at present.
- Assets of Community Value - Community Right to Bid Register.
