Hypnotism

Under the Hypnotism Act 1952, you must have a permit to stage a public performance of hypnotism for entertainment.

When you need a permit

You need a permit if you are:

  • performing hypnotism in public for entertainment (live or broadcast)
  • using hypnotism as part of a show or demonstration where the public is present

It is illegal to hypnotise anyone under 18 during a public performance.

When you do not need a permit

You do not need a permit if:

  • the hypnotism is for scientific research or a medical demonstration
  • you are only hypnotising yourself

Apply for a permit

  • Applications must be made at least 28 days before the performance.
