Apply for a pavement licence

Apply for a pavement licence to put tables, chairs and other street furniture on a public footway

You must have a pavement licence if you have a business selling food and drink and want to place tables and chairs on the pavement.

The furniture must be removable and must relate to the sale or consumption of food or drink.

Your application must include:

  • A plan showing the location of the premises marked by a red line.
  • A plan showing the location of the current boundary of the premises and the proposed area covered by the licence in relation to the highway. The plan must show the positions and number of the proposed tables and chairs together with any other furniture to be place on the highway.
  • Evidence of the right to occupy the premises.
  • Evidence of public liability of £10 million.
  • Photos or brochures showing the proposed type of furniture.

On the day you apply you will need to display a public notice in a prominent position next to the highway. The public consultation lasts for 14 days starting on the day after a valid application has been made.

We will make a decision on the application within 14 days of the end of the objection period.

The current cost of an application is £100.

A pavement licence will last for 2 years from the date of its grant.

If you do not have a licence or breach the terms of your licence, you must remove your furniture from the pavement.
