The Government's £4.8bn ‘Levelling Up’ programme

The second round of the Government’s ‘Levelling Up Fund’ was launched in March 2022, with deadline for bids 06 July 2022 extended to 02 August 2022. 

Colchester was eligible in this round to apply for a project or suite of projects covering one or more intervention themes:

1. Town Centre and High Street regeneration
2.  Local Transport Projects
3. Cultural and Heritage Assets

The Council and our strategic partners have long-held aspirations for the regeneration of St Botolph’s area of the Town Centre, which aligns well with all three intervention themes. A clear and orgainised package of projects was prepared, focusing on the St Botolph's area and the three intervention themes.  

The package was prepared by officers with support of external consultants, endorsed by stakeholders including the ‘We are Colchester’ board, Colchester Civic Society, Colchester’s Business Improvement District, and the Council’s cabinet before it was submitted to Government.
