Colchester City Council is marking its milestone golden 50-year anniversary this year.
Colchester shares this milestone with many other councils established after the Local Government Act of 1972 came into force in April 1974, which saw Colchester borough merged with West Mersea urban district, Wivenhoe urban district, Lexden and Winstree rural district to form a new Colchester district.
Mayor of Colchester, Councillor John Jowers, said: “As the 50th Mayor of the borough, now city, I am proud to be part of the anniversary celebrations to mark this important milestone in local government. To mark the anniversary, we are calling on residents and businesses to help us celebrate this milestone. This year, we're hoping to come together with our communities to look back on the last 50 years of public service and look forward to the next 50 years to come!"
The half century will be marked by celebrating and sharing ‘Your Stories’ from employees, volunteers and residents – all who make a huge and often unseen contributions to Colchester – over the course of the next ten months. These stories will be celebrating the hard work of employees, volunteers and residents – all who have a passion for our great city in the past, now and in the future.
Residents and businesses are also encouraged to get it contact if they are celebrating a special 50th anniversary this year. The council would love for you to be part of its celebrations. Whether your business launched in 1974, you were born in Colchester or got married in May 1974, please get in touch by emailing communications@colchester.gov.uk.
