From the 1 April, visitors to Hollytrees Museum in Colchester will be required to pay a modest admission fee. This initiative, introduced by Colchester City Council, is a key component of its Fit for the Future programme. The programme delivers a mix of income generation and savings activity, all aimed to protect core services whilst closing a budget gap of £6.262 million over the next three years.

Located within the renowned Castle Park, Hollytrees Museum enjoys popularity among local families, tourists from across the country as well as international visitors. Situated just a short walk from Colchester Castle, a prominent heritage site in the city, the museum is housed in an elegant Georgian townhouse, proudly representing Colchester's history.

Visitors will find the museum displays and objects offer a captivating insight into Hollytrees’ and Colchester’s social history. Notable exhibits include an extraordinary dolls house replicating the building and its occupants in 1901, an extensive collection of toys and domestic items, and a stunning clock collection documenting Colchester's evolution through time.

Furthermore, the building hosts Colchester's Visitor Information Centre, serving as a city centre hub for tourists drawn to the city's numerous heritage and cultural attractions. Visitors will continue to be able to access this service free of charge provided by the welcoming Visitor Information Centre team.

Councillor Cllr Michelle Burrows, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Heritage, said: “We’ve already managed to identify a lot of savings and efficiencies, but we also need to raise extra income, where we can, to help close the budget gap we face and ensure we can continue to deliver services residents need and value.

“Visitors to the museum will have the option to choose a one-off ticket or upgrade to a Museum Pass giving yearlong entry to all three of Colchester's museums. For residents this offers fantastic value for money ensuring they can access new displays, exhibitions and events throughout the year, including school holidays for just one cost.”

By visiting Hollytrees Museum or purchasing a Museum Pass, you will be helping to sustain and maintain Colchester’s heritage attractions.
