Colchester City Council is thrilled to announce that it has been shortlisted for two awards for social media with Comms2Point0 UnAwards 2024: Best Social Media Account and Best Comms Professional.

Hosted by Creative Communicators Ltd, the UnAwards celebrates and recognises creativity, innovation and brilliant results across marketing, advertising and media.

The first of its two nominated categories, Best Social Media Account, celebrates captivating and exceptional content that engages our residents.

Its second nominated category, Best Comms Professional, spotlights a communications professional who has done something significant in 2023. The nominee is the Council’s Social Media and Content Officer, for their great work, developing the reach and impact of our social media platforms over the last year.

From celebrating key multi-million-pound investments in the City of Colchester and community pride and achievements to essential messages on recycling and rubbish and NHS vaccination, the council is driving forward its social media strategy to truly engage with and listen to residents.

Over the last year, the council has adapted a new approach that has sent engagement rates skyrocketing. That brings together great content, authentic human tone, and a humorous commentary that all work together to celebrate Colchester and its communities.

Here’s a taster of the success the Colchester City Council Facebook page has achieved:

  • An average of 654 reactions and 191 comments per post. (The average rate of reactions other councils in the UK gets stands at 26 per post.)
  • Gained 7,000 followers in one year, adding to its existing 9,354 followers.
  • Average post reach has surged from a modest 1,862 to an astounding 26,984.
  • Average reactions per post have skyrocketed from an average of 5 to 654.

Cllr David King, Colchester City Council Leader, said: “It’s fantastic to be shortlisted for Best Social Media Account and Best Comms Professional against other leading local public sector organisations. I’m incredibly proud of this achievement and for the recognition that our employees deserve.

“We are setting a great example for others in local government, with social media presence that catches attention and informs. Showing we are a council that is open to different views, that informs, listens, and responds to our residents and has some great staff here to help get over what matters to the public we serve.”

The winners will be announced at the UnAwards ceremony on Friday, 1 December 2023.
