Colchester Museums Development Foundation (CMDF) is proud to be joining organisations across the world to support Giving Tuesday, the Global Day of Generosity, which will take place on 28 November 2023.
Giving Tuesday encourages people to take a step back, reflect, and then share kindness and do good for others.
Coordinated by the Chartered Institute of Fundraising, the public can get involved in numerous ways. You can donate to your chosen charity, volunteer in your local community or simply help a friend, neighbour or family member.
CMDF supports Colchester Museums to inspire and enrich the local community through the preservation, exploration, and sharing of the town’s heritage.
To mark Giving Tuesday, the Foundation is launching an Adopt an Object campaign. Colchester Museums’ curators have identified some of the most prized and unusual objects in their collections, including a Viking axe, the famous Lexden griffin, and even a flying penis pendant, which can be virtually adopted to raise vital funds to preserve Colchester’s rich heritage for future generations.
Each of these carefully chosen objects originates from collections or excavations in Colchester and the surrounding areas and tells a unique story about Colchester's heritage.

Councillor Cllr Michelle Burrows, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Heritage, said: “All gifts adopted will enable CMDF to support and widen the reach of Colchester Museums within the local community. From enabling accessible events, to providing new research opportunities and supporting ongoing work to ensure the collections are as diverse and accessible as possible, adopters will be helping to preserve Colchester’s rich heritage for future generations.”
