Street Tag Jubilee Trail in Colchester!

PUBLISHED: 19 April 2022

Residents and visitors can discover more of Colchester's history by joining a virtual, augmented reality Jubilee Trail on Street Tag, which is just one of the activities organised by Colchester Borough Council’s to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Street Tag is a free, interactive app, which promotes physical activity in a fun accessible way. It turns physical activity into a game by converting walking, running and cycling into Street Tag points (tags). It is a way to transform streets and parks into a giant virtual playground for local communities.

The Jubilee Trail will run from 2 May to 26 June 2022 and take you on a journey to discover 15 locations across the borough, each with a link to royalty past and present. At each location, app users can learn about the Royal connection by listening to audio clips or seeing photos and video clips from the past, bringing the locations and stories to life. Users will collect 300 Street Tag points for every location that they interact with.

Deputy Mayor of Colchester, Councillor Tim Young, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to get outdoors, start having some fun, and learn something new about Colchester’s history and Royal connections. I’m expecting lots of people in Colchester to download the free app over the next few weeks and follow the trail.”

Seun Oshinaike, Street Tag, added: "We are looking forward to celebrating the Royal history with the Colchester community through the digital lens of the Street Tag app. With lots of fun and educational curated content for residents to experience."

Downloading the app is completely free, find out more about Street Tag here: www.colchester.gov.uk/street-tag. Once you have the app, go to the menu, and select ‘Playgrounds’ and then ‘Monument Trail’ – clicking on ‘Colchester’.

The Street Tag app was launched in Colchester in March 2021 in a partnership between Colchester Borough Council and the Essex Local Delivery Pilot (LDP). Getting outdoors and being more active has been proven to make an enormous impact on people’s physical and mental wellbeing. Incentivising getting more people outside and moving, works towards the Council’s strategic aim to create safe, healthy and active communities.

A varied programme of Platinum Jubilee events has been planned across the borough, which will culminate in a national bank holiday weekend in June. These include flags in High Street, a Gun Salute in Castle Park, community picnic, lighting of Castle Park Beacon, virtual museum displays and street parties.
