Colchester Borough Council is pleased to unveil a new mural in its St John’s multi-storey car park, which has a positive, vibrant tropical theme featuring flora and fauna from around the world.
This third colourful and fun mural follows two previous murals which were painted to celebrate the town’s history in St Mary’s multi-storey car park. All three murals have been created for free by the same local artist, Leroy.
This latest mural took five months to complete, as the artist worked on a voluntary basis late in the evenings and as restrictions permitted, with the support of the council.
To protect the murals, an anti-graffiti glaze has been applied which has been funded by the Safer Colchester Partnership.
Mural artist, Leroy said: “I wanted to paint something vibrant, cheerful and fun so a tropical theme fitted perfectly.
“This work is also a celebration of the diversity and richness of the natural world and the incredible variety of shapes and colours, which make nature so fascinating for so many of us.
“I'm very grateful that the council gave me their complete trust from start to finish on this new project, and I hope that local residents and visitors alike can enjoy these murals for many years to come.”
Councillor Mike Lilley, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Communities, Wellbeing and Public Safety, added: “I’m delighted that once again we have been able to collaborate with the same local artist to create this third, tropical-inspired mural in St John’s Car Park.
“We will be posting photos of the murals on the council’s Twitter @YourColchester and Facebook /EnjoyColchester pages for everyone to see, and hope people will come and see these bright and colourful artworks in person as they are a unique asset to the car park.”
The murals are part of a series of improvement works for St Mary’s and St John’s Car Parks that has taken place, including improved LED lighting, new painted steel window frames and work to close off spaces under stairwells to turn them into solid walls – in both car parks. These works have been funded as part of the Better Colchester campaign which sets out to make Colchester an even more attractive place to live, work and visit.
