What is a CAFE event?

CAFE (Colchester and Friends Events) is an initiative started by us and Livewell. Once a week, participating venues invite local people to come along to a weekly session, to enjoy free tea and coffee and a friendly chat.

The free events help people to meet others and to share friendships within the community. People can attend knowing they are guaranteed a warm welcome in a friendly environment and will not stand out as being alone.

How did it begin?

Loneliness is a painful emotion, with one in 20 adults in the UK describing themselves as feeling lonely. We are taking steps to tackle this issue and launched a scheme to encourage people to come together and get talking.

The free event is aimed at people struggling with isolation and loneliness who would like to meet for refreshments and a friendly chat. The first ever CAFE event was held on 3 June 2019 at GO4 Café on Recreation Road.

All kinds of venues are being encouraged to sign up to hold CAFE events, opening their doors for two hours once a week, to allow people to come in for refreshments and a friendly chat.
