Housing Benefit and Local Council Tax Support

You can find out if you qualify for Housing Benefit and Local Council Tax Support by using the online calculator. If you qualify you will be able to continue to apply for the benefit(s) you are entitled to.

If you are working age (currently 15 - 64), live within the postcode areas CO6 2 or CO8 5 and you need financial help to pay your rent you will need to apply for Universal Credit, instead of Housing Benefit.

You can use this application to:

  • see how much Housing Benefit you could get if you rent your home
  • see how much Local Council Tax Support you could get if you are the person who is responsible for paying the Council Tax for the home you live in

The application is in two parts. The first is a calculator which can give you an idea of what you may be entitled to. The second part allows you to make a claim.

Universal Credit

Universal Credit is being introduced in Colchester using a phased approach. It is planned that Universal Credit will be fully introduced in Colchester in July 2018.

It is planned that it will eventually replace these six benefits:

  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Working Tax Credits
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Housing Benefit

If you are working age (currently 15 - 64), live within the postcode areas CO6 2 or CO8 5 and you need financial help to pay your rent you will need to apply for Universal Credit, instead of Housing Benefit.
