Winter support and coronavirus (COVID-19) guidance

Colchester Borough Council is providing support for residents, businesses, and communities throughout winter. The government has announced that England will move to Plan B in response to the risks of the Omicron variant. Check the guidance on GOV.UK for what this means for you.

An evening of free festive fun at historic Colchester Castle!

PUBLISHED: 29 November 2021

Colchester is looking merry and bright. Christmas trees are on display, the town is lit with twinkling festive lights, and the team at Colchester’s historic Castle are getting ready to host their annual free open evening.

Taking place on Wednesday 8 December, the Castle will be throwing its doors open for FREE and welcoming visitors from 3pm-8pm.

You are invited to come along and soak up the festive atmosphere with carols, mince pies and mulled wine. Meet Father Christmas and his Elves and receive a gift. Entry to the Castle will be free, however there is a small charge of £6 to see Santa and receive a gift.

The open evening also provides a wonderful opportunity to see the Castle’s new exhibition Decoding The Roman Dead and learn more about life 2,000 years ago in Roman Britain.

The Castle gift shop will be open providing a terrific opportunity to get ahead with your Christmas shopping. With everything from stocking-fillers to exquisite, limited edition jewellery items – there is something to suit everyone on your list! Our Memberships and Object adoptions also provide a meaningful gift choice, which both help to protect and preserve the museum's collections for future generations. If you cannot decide on a specific gift, why not purchase a gift voucher, and let your recipient choose what suits them best?! Either way, Colchester Museums have Christmas wrapped up this year.

Councillor Darius Laws, Portfolio Holder for Economy, Business and Heritage, said: “Christmas is a magical time of year and this year, we’ve got some great events and Colchester inspired gift options lined up from medieval archery themed toys to replica Roman jewellery, for the adults. So come along and celebrate with us on the 8 December, but do not worry if you cannot make it; we have a packed calendar of festive events planned for the whole family to enjoy throughout December. Let us gather together family and friends and create some wonderful festive memories.”
