Council’s sports park offers cycling sessions for people with disabilities

Wheels for All is a nationally-recognised programme

Date issued: 25 November 2019

The Colchester Northern Gateway Sports Park development will be offering cycling sessions for people with disabilities through the Wheels for All initiative.

Wheels for All is a nationally-recognised programme that embraces all people with disabilities and differing needs, to engage in fun cycling activities using a range of adapted bikes. The Northern Gateway Sports Park will be investing in equipment to support the initiative, removing barriers and allowing all residents and visitors to enjoy the 1-mile floodlit cycle track.

Cllr Theresa Higgins, Colchester Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Commercial Services, said: “We are thrilled that the Northern Gateway Sports Park development will host Wheels for All activities. I’ve seen how much it means to people who have disabilities. It is an important step to allow all residents access to health and wellbeing activities in Colchester.”

Ian Tierney, Wheels for All Charity Director, said: “We are really excited to be bringing the Wheels for All initiative to Colchester, which will deliver cycling activities to people of all abilities, and will build a regular physical activity offer so that people can cycle using adapted cycles and support packages from volunteers on their terms.

“Such a programme is very much needed for the communities of Colchester and beyond.”

Wheels for All held its first cycling event in Colchester earlier this year, which was attended by over 80 participants of various abilities, with many cycling for the very first time.

Following the success of the open days, Wheels for All will be offering taster days on the 2-3 December at the Garrison’s Corporal Budd VC Gymnasium to coincide with World disability day. These will be followed up again in the spring with monthly sessions at the Garrison Track.

Anyone who is interested in the taster day should contact Ian Tierney for further details on 01925 234213 or email ian.tierney@cycling.org.uk
