Festive family fun at the Colchester High Street Christmas Market

Shoppers will be able to browse and shop from almost 100 stalls spanning the length of the High Street

Date issued: 26 November 2018

Over 10,000 people are expected to flock to Colchester High Street on Sunday 9th December for the town’s annual Christmas Market.

Shoppers will be able to browse and shop from almost 100 traders whose stalls offering fashion, toys, festive gifts, jewellery, art and crafts will span the length of the High Street, which will be closed to traffic throughout the event from 10 am to 5pm.

Organised with support from Food & Drink Festivals UK, there will be street food aplenty with over 25 food stalls offering everything from gourmet Yorkshire puddings to Caribbean fusion food and burritos.

Children can enjoy a fun-packed visit with classic funfair rides, including roundabouts and a Hall of Mirrors, arts & crafts and story-telling from ‘Footprints Street Theatre’. Raising funds for Autism Anglia, the Essex Community Knitters will be hosting the popular Christmas stall presenting an array of knitted gifts including clothes, scarves, gloves and dolls.  Visitors can also support Help for Heroes - look out for their mascot Bear amongst the crowds.

Music lovers will be entertained throughout the day with live performances from local singers and musicians including the Colchester Community Choir and, for the first year, Colne Radio will be broadcasting their live radio show direct from the market.

Cllr Martin Goss, Colchester Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Waste, Environment and Transportation, said: “Our Christmas Market gets bigger and better each year and it’s great to welcome new traders to Colchester adding to the wealth of stalls and attractions which will span the length of our historic high street. With live music, children’s activities, funfair rides and street food, this will be the perfect place to shop, meet friends, bring young families and savour the festive spirit.”

Colchester High Street will be closed to traffic for the day, creating a large pedestrianised area for visitors to the market.

Visitors can take advantage of the Council's year-round, great value Sunday parking offer, with all day parking available in Britannia or Vineyard Street Car Parks for just £1. For more information visit www.colchester.gov.uk/parking

MARKET EXTRA: Colchester’s Market takes place every Friday & Saturday. This year there is an extra market day, on Sunday 23rd December, from 10am – 3pm.
