Are you a lifelong or recent resident? Have you ever wanted to find out more about aspects of Colchester’s historic past? Well, now is the time – thanks to the team at the Visitor Information Centre.

To celebrate Colchester’s new city status, residents have the chance to head off with an Official Colchester City Tour Guide and explore the city's rich heritage – all for FREE!

With a story stretching back over 2,000 years, there is a lot to discover.

There’s a choice of tours covering everything from specific periods in history, to geographical areas, major events and themes running through the City’s history there’s something for everyone. And it’s not all about the city centre – with a chance to discover the fascinating histories of Lexden, New Town, Dedham or Wivenhoe, and ways to uncover traces of Iron Age Colchester from Hilly Fields to the Lexden Earth Works and Bluebottle Grove.

Online booking for the tours is now open at www.colchester.gov.uk/colchester-vic-booking and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. So don’t miss out! All tours are free of charge to residents.

Councillor Pam Cox, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Heritage, said: “These tours are a superb opportunity to get to know more about the city you live in, and what better time than during Colchester’s Year of Celebration. Discover more about Roman Colchester, the history of iconic Jumbo, the Siege of Colchester plus much more. Places are limited and some tours may not be suitable for all mobility levels, so please check when booking.”
