Summer officially starts in June and Colchester Borough Council’s Parks and Countryside sites are hosting events to help visitors make the most of what nature has to offer this time of year.
The first event is the FREE Salary Brook Wildlife Walk taking place on Saturday 1 June starting at 10.30am. Walkers will join Colchester Natural History Society to look at plants, birds, insects and any other wildlife on a pleasant walk through the site.
Anyone wishing to take part, is asked to meet at Salary Brook near the Scarfe Way parking area, off Avon Way in Colchester. This event will take place until approximately 3.30pm, although walkers are free to leave at any time.
The second FREE event in June is the Summer Wildlife Trail App Launch at High Woods Country Park on 8 June. Visitors who download the new app onto their phone, will be able to enjoy an interactive one-mile wildlife trail and discover fascinating facts about the wild inhabitants of the park and have a go at the Wildlife Crazy Quiz.
The app is suitable for all age groups (including adults), but for those under 5 years old, a simplified paper version, costing £1 will be available from the Visitor Centre. This drop-in event will be taking place 11am- 3pm and staff at the Visitor Centre will be on hand to help visitors make the most of the app and trail.
The third event, Fishing for Beginners which is being held at High Woods Country Park on 9 June is now fully booked.
Councillor Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Transport and Environment, said: “There are over 300 open spaces and 16 countryside sites across the borough and events such as these enable us to share, appreciate and learn about the local wildlife that we have on our doorstep and the important role it plays in our environment.”
